CTH Level 1 Certificate in English for Tourism and Hospitality

This English programme is designed to improve the language and vocabulary of learners who currently (or want to) work in the hospitality and tourism sectors.

What you will learn

The purpose of the CTH Level 1 Certificate in English for Tourism and Hospitality is to:

  • enable learners to use language and vocabulary relevant to the industry;
  • help learners to gain and/or improve their English skills; and
  • instil confidence in learners to communicate in English.

By studying this programme, you will gain a better understanding of the industry. This knowledge will help you to communicate with confidence in order to complete key roles and responsibilities, such as customer service.

During your lessons, you will be taught technical terms relevant to the hospitality and tourism sectors. As you become accustomed to using technical terms, you will add a extra level of professionalism to your vocabulary. Being knowledgable and professional are key characteristics that international hotel groups and travel companies look for in job applicants.

Duration and mode of delivery

This programme consists of 200 Guided Learning Hours (GLH) and should be delivered in suitable teaching rooms with access to IT facilities. Please contact our CTH Teaching Centres to enquire about the programme delivery schedule.

Entry requirements

The CTH Level 1 Certificate in English for Tourism and Hospitality is an open access qualification - this means that applicants do not need to hold a formal qualification to enrol on the programme.

Learners who want to develop their English language skills are welcome to apply; however, they should ideally meet the following requirements (please contact our CTH Teaching Centres for further guidance):

  • 16 years old (minimum), and
  • have competence English at level equivalent to IELTS 3.5.

Academic and career progression

Upon the successful completion of this programme, learners may choose to apply for job roles or continue to develop their skills using a more advanced CTH programme.

Travel English
This unit aims to provide learners with an understanding of English relating to travel and destinations and how to provide information on directions and traditions.
Assessment Method: Oral presentation

English for Working in Hotels & Tourism
This unit aims to introduce learners to sales, marketing and PR in the bar and restaurant industry. Learners will understand how venues are affected by both internal and external factors. Learners will be introduced to the key concepts of marketing, and sales techniques and PR strategies, and understand how to apply them to their business.
Assessment Method: One reading and writing test plus one listening and speaking test

English for Working in Restaurants
This unit aims to introduce learners to sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR) within the bar industry. Learners will understand how to adopt ethical and sustainable practices, and about their responsibilities when selling and serving alcohol. Learners will also understand the responsibilities a venue has regarding discrimination and equality in the workplace and with their customers.
